7 Best Kenya and Tanzania Safari Combinations

Three days is the shortest safari that still feels like a proper safari. You get two nights in the bush, at least one full day of game drives, and two sunrises and two sunsets, the hours when animals are most active. What you cannot do in three days is see everything, so the itinerary you choose matters.

Here are five 3-day Kenya safari itineraries from Nairobi, Mombasa and Diani, each with a day-by-day plan and an honest note on who it suits.

Is three days enough for a Kenya safari?

Yes. Three days is enough for a rewarding Kenya safari if you visit one park, or two parks close together, and sleep both nights in the same area. You will not see the whole country, but you can see a wide range of wildlife, often including four or all of the Big Five, and enjoy a relaxed pace.

The rules for a great 3-day safari:

  • Stay close to where you start. Choose a park within about four hours of Nairobi or the coast, or fly.
  • Minimise hotel changes. Two nights in one place usually beats two single nights in two places.
  • Protect your full day. Day 2 should have no transfers, just game drives.

1. Maasai Mara from Nairobi

Day 1: Leave Nairobi early, stopping at the Great Rift Valley viewpoint. Arrive for lunch and an afternoon game drive.

Day 2: Full day in the Mara: a sunrise drive, a picnic lunch on the plains and an evening drive, or two separate drives with a rest at camp. Optional Maasai village visit.

Day 3: Early game drive, breakfast, then return to Nairobi by late afternoon.

Who it suits: first-time visitors, big-cat lovers and anyone visiting from July to October, when the wildebeest migration is usually in the Mara.

2. Amboseli from Nairobi

Day 1: Drive south via Emali to Amboseli, arriving for lunch. Afternoon drive to the swamps. Day 2: Sunrise drive for Kilimanjaro views, Observation Hill, afternoon with elephant families. Day 3: Morning drive and return to Nairobi.

Who it suits: elephant lovers, photographers and travelers who want a slightly shorter drive than the Mara. Amboseli’s park fee (USD 90 per non-resident adult per 24 hours) is also lower than the Mara’s peak-season rate.

Book it as: the 3-day Amboseli safari with Mount Kilimanjaro views.

3. Tsavo East and West from Mombasa

Day 1: Pick-up from your coast hotel, drive to Tsavo East and game drive among red-dusted elephants. Day 2: Cross to Tsavo West for Mzima Springs and the Shetani lava flow. Day 3: Morning game drive and return to the beach.

Who it suits: beach holidaymakers and budget-conscious travelers. Tsavo’s fees are USD 80 per non-resident adult per 24 hours, and there are no flights to pay for.

Book it as: the 3-day Tsavo East and Tsavo West safari from your beach hotel, or the 3-day Tsavo East and Taita Hills safari from Mombasa for a night at a stilted waterhole lodge.

4. Amboseli and Tsavo from the coast

Day 1: Early start from the coast to Tsavo East, afternoon game drive, overnight near the park or in the Taita Hills. Day 2: Continue to Amboseli, with an afternoon drive to the swamps. Day 3: Kilimanjaro sunrise drive, then return to the coast (a long day), or continue to Nairobi.

Who it suits: travelers who want two contrasting parks and do not mind longer travel. If you can add one more day, the 4-day Tsavo East, Amboseli and Taita Hills safari is noticeably more relaxed.

5. Fly-in Maasai Mara from Diani or Mombasa

Day 1: Morning flight from Ukunda or Mombasa to a Mara airstrip (direct on some days, via Nairobi on others). Afternoon game drive. Day 2: Full day in the Mara. Day 3: Morning drive and fly back to the coast.

Who it suits: travelers on a beach holiday who want the Mara without two long road days. Remember the light aircraft luggage limit of about 15 kg per person in a soft bag.

Book it as: a longer version of the 2-day Maasai Mara fly-in safari from Diani or Mombasa, or browse our fly-in safari packages.

Best itinerary by starting point

  • Starting in Nairobi: Maasai Mara for cats, Amboseli for elephants.
  • Starting in Mombasa, Nyali or Bamburi: Tsavo East and West by road.
  • Starting in Diani: Tsavo by road for value, or the Mara by air for the headline safari.
  • Starting in Watamu or Malindi: Tsavo East via the Sala gate.

Road vs flying

Driving is cheaper, gives you a view of rural Kenya and has no luggage limits. Flying saves around five to six hours each way to the Mara and turns a travel day into a game-drive day. On a three-day trip, where every hour counts, flying to the Mara often makes sense if your budget allows. For Amboseli and Tsavo, driving is usually the better value. Our comparison of road versus fly-in safaris in Kenya covers this in detail.

What three days typically costs

The cost of a 3-day safari depends on four things. We do not quote a single figure because each changes with the season and your choices, but here is how the budget builds up:

Cost componentWhat drives itExample (non-resident adult)
Park feesThe park and the seasonMaasai Mara: USD 100 per day (January to June) or USD 200 (July to December) in 2026. Amboseli: USD 90 per 24 hours. Tsavo: USD 80 per 24 hours.
AccommodationBudget camp, mid-range lodge or luxury campVaries widely; peak season costs more
TransportShared or private vehicle; road or flightPrivate vehicles cost more per person for small groups
ExtrasDrinks, tips, village visits, balloon flightsOptional

Two quotes that look similar can differ a lot once park fees and vehicle type are included, so always compare like for like. Park fees are set by Kenya Wildlife Service and, for the Mara, by Narok County.
